a play and puppet-making workshop for all ages about the life of Ukrainian artist Polina Rayko
The Healing House is an interactive play and a workshop with live music aimed at families with young children created by Fetch Theatre (https://www.thefetch.co.uk) and brought to London by Ukraine Hub (www.ukrainehub.uk)
It’s based on the life and art of a Ukrainian artist Polina Rayko, a unique talent who picked up a paintbrush for the first time aged 69 and painted the interior of her house with stunning folk imagery. Just in six years, without training, access to books or even television she transformed her house into a national treasure, propelling her into an international icon of folk art.
Polina sadly died in 2004 and in 2023, flood water from the collapsed Nova Kakhovka Dam in the Russian-occupied Kherson province destroyed seventy percent of the art work painted by Rayko. However, inspired by her resilience, many people internationally are continuing to celebrate her work.
This family performance and workshop celebrates her amazing creativity and features puppets, shadow puppetry, and live music performed on the Bandura. Together we will reimagine her work and rebuild the house at the end of the performance with the creativity, colour and joy of our workshop participants.
We hope The Healing House will enable Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian people of all ages, to come together, explore their creativity, have fun and share their dreams and aspirations.
